Artist Statement: "The King, Queen, and Jack of spades are part of a deck of playing cards I created with wood engravings. With each suit I played around with the meanings behind the symbols of the cards. Spades become farmers. Diamonds become the affluent rich, Hearts become the lust-driven individuals, and Clubs become nature-linked deities. "This project began with an interest in making practical hand made objects that would become too precious to use in their intended fashions. I wanted to make an everyday object into art, much like the creators of handmade limited edition books.
