Chess is a game played on a checkered board, and each player begins with 16 chess set pieces. There are eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks, one queen, and one king. The queen can move in any direction, and the king can move one space in any direction. Each piece has its own value and strategic importance in the game.
